MASS MEETING AT SYDNEY. Received April 29, 4.7 a.m. SYDNEY, April 2. A mass meeting of Chinese merchants discussed the Tatsu.Maru incident, and adopted the series of resolutions (cabled on March 28th) in favour of boycotting Japanese goorls, with the addition of a resolution, "That the Chinese bear no ill-will to 7 wardd their Japanese friends." RIVAL FACTIONS CO-OPERATE. PATRIOTIC SPEECHES. CHINESE DETERMINED. Received April 2, 9.55 a.m. SYDNEY, April 2. Two rival Chinese factions co-oper-ated in the movement. The chairman read a cable message from Canton asking for the despatch of r.o goods by Japanese steamers and the purchase of none. Patriotic speeches were delivered. The chairman faid the Chinese realise 1 that the only instrument of war they possessed at present in their relation's with the rest of the world was commercialism. Japan, not having played the game, the Chinese wt-rj determined tu enforce the boycott until the humiliation inflicted upon them was removed. He demandei tho impeachment of Yuan-Shih-Jai, Presidvnt of the Central Board of Government, for yielding to a case of gross injustice and unreasonable demands.

The resolutions drafted by a former meeting of Chinese merchants for submission to a general meeting of their countrymen astert:—"That the action of the Japanese with regard to the Tatsu Maru incident is a violation of treaty rights, and the demand of the Japanese for an apology headed an indignity upon the Chinese natfon which must be resented." "That this association resolv'es to withdraw all support from the Japanese line of mail steamers in every way, and that all goods imported and exported by Chinese firms shall be carried by other lines of steamships trading to the Far East." "That Chinese merchants refuse to transact business of any description with Japanese merchants in Sydney, and decline to handle all kinds of Japanese goods." "That all Chinese merchants and traders in Sydney and other parts of New South "Wales shall be required to enter into a bond providing for a penalty of £SO fur every breach of this agreement."
