MASTERTON BOROUGH COUNCIL.

ORDINARY MEETING. the Mayor (Mr J. M. Coradine) presided at the ordinary meeting of the Masterton Borough Council last evening. There were also presenters J. H. Pauling, J. Elliott, A. Haughey, W. Morris, W. Pragnell, J. C. Ewington, J. Prentice, and J. Yarr. Mr P. Auld wrote claiming £5 for damages sustained to a mare belonging to him through coming into contact with an unfinished drain-box at the intersection of Jean and Church Streets. —lt was decided, on the motion of Cr Elliott, to give the Works Committee power to act in dealing with the claim, and the remedying of the defect mentioned at once. Mr J. S. Berriman wrote reminding the Council that the promise of the Council to kerb and asphalt the footpath in front of his Pine Street property four years ago had not yet been carried out. The Mayor and Cr Ewington recalled the circumstances of the promise being made, in consideration of Mr Berriman giving some land to the Council for street widening purposes gratis.

Brown, Town Clerk, requesting to provided with a copy of a special report, concerning mistakes in the borough rate book, submitted to the Council by ordar from the ActingTown Clerk, which Mr Brown stated concerned him personally. The Mayor stated that he had previously received a letter from Mr Brown on the same subject, and he had replied stating that the report was for the Council's own benefit, and was not for publication. He thought that that was the only reply that could be sent to the letter, and should be forwarded again in answer to the second letter. He moved in that direction.

Cr Ewintgon considered that Mr Brown was fully entitled to a copy of the report, as it was, in his opinion, public property, and he moved, an amendment to that effect. He twitted the Mayor with not bringing th 9 first letter he received from Mr Brown before the Council, a) it was addressed to the Mayor and Councillors, and not to the Mayor personally. The Mayor denied the last statement, and after a brief, but sharp discussion, the amendment, which was seconded by Cr Morris, was lost, and the motion carried o:i the voices. Mr F. Carson applied for the use of the Park and Lake on Easter Monday for the purpose of holding a "naval battle" and balloon ascent 3n fireworks. The letter was refeired to the Park Committe. The Clerk was directed to reply to a letter from Mr F. E. Lamb, architect (who offered to submit a competitive design for the new gas carbonising plant and additions to the Public Baths) to the effect that the Council would remember his offer when work was required. A letter from St. Patrick's Day Sports Association, asking for refund of fee charged for use of Park on the 19th instant, was referred to the Park Committee. It was dec'ded to refer to the Finance Committee the question of re-leasing, the section occupied by Mr H. Petersen's boardir.g-hou3e in Lincoln road. j The Mayor and Cr.
