PROPOSED BOROUGH DESTRUCTOR.

In conformity with notice given Iby him, Cr Haughey moved at the Council meeting, last evening, that in the best interests of the ratepayers of this borough the Council take stepa to establish a destructor to deal with and destroy the garbage of this boruogb, the said destructor, buildings, etc.,' to form part of proposed new gasworks buildings, to be ■erected near the railway station. The grounds adduced in the notice of ■motion were as follow:—"(1) The erection of the destructor would improve the general health of the Borough; (2) it will be more economical and any force generated can be used to advantage; (3) the saving effected (in the mover's opinion) will pay interest and charges on money expend fid. In support of the motion Cr Haughey said the town was rapidly growing, and it was essential that adequate means be taken to deal with Nthe important question of refuse. While it was now practically impossible to vote the money away just flow, the Council could affirm the jjcceasity of the establishment of a '■" destructor. Mr J. W. Blackman, gas had informed the mover Jthat he was getting out some infor- " mation from Home, bearing on the question, which would when it arrived be of material assistance to the Council. The economic and health aspects were dealt with, and Cr Haughey said that two alternate schemes had suggested themselves to him. One was a simple furnace, to cost about £2OO, which would effect a saving to the Council of from £SO to i £75 per year on the present system. The other scheme involved an expenditure of from £1,500 to £2,000, but it had the advantage of being repro- i ductive, as power would be generated which would mere than repay the expenditure. He added to his resolution that Mr Blackman be asked to procure all information on the question. Cr Prentice seconded the motion. Cr Morris said he could not support the motion, setting out as his reasons that the figures quoted by Cr Haughey were hardly sufficient or correct enough to warrant the Council proceeding with the subject. n Other Councillors said it would be if further information jwere supplied before the Council reaffirmed that a destructor was necesxsary. It was eventually decided, on 1 the motion of Cr Ewington, seconded by Cr Pauling, to appoint Cr Haughey -and th* gas manager a committee to . bring down a report on the matter.
