INFANT LIFE PRESERVATION.
AUCKLAND, March 26. Th<s Premier, replying to a deputation representing the Independent Political League and Trades and Labour Council, agreed with the importance of legislation to preserve infant life, especially in view of the fact that the birth-rate in New Zealand last year was 28 per cent, below that which is necessary to keep the country going. He promised to bring before his colleagues the proposals made for the establishment of State nurseries' and the regulation of premiums for adoption, some premiums now paid being regarded by the deputation as premiums to murder. . CAUGHT IN THE ACT. WELLINGTON, March 26. Two men were captured to-night rifling the contents of a trunk stolen from the New Zealander Hotel, and consisting of expensive ladies apparel. They will be brought before the Court in the morning.
