CLOSING OF LARGE STEEL WORKS.

CONSTERNATION CAUSED. Received March 24, 9.28 p.m. LONDON, March 24. The announcement of the closing of large steel works f&r several months, owing to the scarcity of orders, has caused consternation at Barrow-in-Furness. Barrow-in-Furness is a seaport and manufacturing town in North Lancashire. In 1847 it was a fishing village of 325 inhabitants. The population is now considerably over 50,000.
