SEDDON MEMORIAL TECHNICAL SCHOOL.

+.— —■ MEETING OF SUBSCRIBERS

PLANS FOR BUILDING APPROVED.

A meeting of subs:ribers to the Seddon Memorial Technical School was held in the Borough Council Chambers, last evening, when the balancesheet in connection with the movement was presented. Twelve persons were present, Mr J. M. Coradine, the originator of the scheme, being in the chair. Ihe chairman moved the adoption of the balance sheet, which showed that £1,225 14s had been promised, and £1,202 2s 6d collected, the interest to date on the amount in the bank being £l6 9s Id, making a gross total of £1,218 16s 7d. In outlining the history of the present movement, the speaker said that various attempts in the direction of establishing a suitable building to accommodate students had ended unsuccessfully, but the recognition of the services rendered to the country by the late Premier, who was also Minister of Education, furnished a fitting occasion for a popular appeal for funds, and the present success was recorded. He thanked the public and various local organisations for their contributions, and the Trust Lands Trust for its handsome donation and liberal terms for a site, and also Mr M. C. O'Connoll for his untiring efforts in canvassing for subscriptions. Mr C. E. Daniell seconded the adoption of the balance sheet, and said that he was absent during the period the money was collected, and wished to express his appreciation of the magnificent efforts of the committee. The balance sheet was duly adopted. On the motion of Mr J. Prentice, seconded by Mr R. Brown, it was decided to adopt the plans for the building, as drawn up by Messrs Varnham and Rose, and also the site as granted by the Trust Lands Trustees.

Mr Prentice made congratulatory reference to the efforts of the chairman, Mr O'Connell, and others who assisted in the collection of funds The chairman then invited suggestions as to a function to celebrate the erection of the new building. He said that as the season was not a favourable one for foundation-stone laying, it might be better to have a gathering in the School after it was opened when funds towards the furnishing of the institution might also be raised. Some £450 would be available out of the funds collected for fumshing. The meeting endorsed the remarks of the chairman as to a function after the School was opened, and it was finally left to the managars of the School to arrange details in that connection. Mr W. H. Jackson moved a hearty vote of thanks to the committee of the fund, and in doing so said it was due to the great enthusiasm of the committee that such a magnificent result had been achieved. As a manager the speaker said he was entitled to move such a vote, and the School would always be a source of pride to those who had been instrumental in accomplishing its erection. The motion was seconded by Mr Daniell, and carried unanimously.
