THE MINERS' FEDERATION AND DISCIPLINE. DRASTIC RESOLUTIONS. Received March 23, 12.15 p.m. SYDNEY, March 23. The Newcastle Miners' Committee of Management has passed drastic resolutions to enforce discipline within the ranks of the Miners' Federation. As a result it is expected that *he committee will now be able to fix the guarantee asked for by the President of the Special Coal Court, namely, that a further cessation of work shall not occur during the sittings of the court. The Pelaw Main strikers have resumed work unconditionally. THE WHARF LABOURERS' STRIKE. Received March 23, 11.10 p.m. SYDNEY, March 23. The conference between the coastal steamship companies and the Wharf Labourers' Union was resumed this afternoon. The representatives of the shipping companies presented the final terms under which they were prepared to settle the strike. These were subsequently considered and refused* by the representatives of the men. The conference adjourned till to-morrow. Mr Hughes states that the position is critical but not hopeless. The Employers' Federation, at a meeting, discussed the course of action merchants and traders should take in connection with the strike. It was resolved "that the time has arrived to assert the right ( of the employer to utilise non-union labour, especially at a time when unionists refuse to work at the arbitration awax-d rate of wages." It was further decided to give full support to the coastal companies maintaining this principle. STILL ANOTHER STRIKE. 330 PAINTERS IDLE. Received March 24, 1.9 a.m. SYDNEY, March 23. The painters employed by many of the large city firms have struck for an increase of a penny per hour in wages. Three hundred men aj*e idte. A number of Government contracts are involved.
