OLD-AGE PENSIONS. MELBOURNE, March 21. Mr A. Deakin, Federal Premier, in referring to Old-Age Pensions, said that in the event of the resources of the Customs and Excise Departments proving insufficient and a resort to direct taxation being made, he favoured a tax on unimproved land values. CAUGHT IN A CHIMNEY. MELBOURNE, March 21. A man was found early this morning fast in the chimney of a barber's shop at Horsham. The chimney was pulled down to release him. He was then arrested on a charge of attempted burglary. He stated he was put down the chimney, but declined to disclose his accomplices. FEDERAL GOVERNMENT'S FINANCIAL PROPOSALS. MELBOURNE, March 21. The financial proposals of the Federal Government include the taking over of th° State debts incurred both before and after Federation.
