The Premier (Sir Joseph Ward) has replied as follows to an invitation extended to him to be present at the banquet to be tendered to the United Fire Brigades' Association delegates in the Town Hall, this evening :—'l am just on my way to Wellington to attend Cabinet meetings. I should personally like to be. present at the banquet to be given on Wednesday evening in Masterton, but cannot say definitely whether I can manage it. Before the confirmation, yesterday, by the County Council, of a special order to strike a rate over a special area for the WeraiH-Ferny-hurst Road loan of £6,300, Cr Harris said he would oppose the courirmation unless some assurance were forthcoming that the expenditure of that amount would not jeopardise any separate urgent work which might become necessary. The Clerk explained that the loan was granted on the understanding that not more than £3,000 would be expended in one year, and seeing that £6,000 was the limit of the Treasury's annual allowance to any County Council, it was improbable that more than £3,000 would be spent out of the loan the first year. It was decided to still further insure the position in this respect," and a resolution was passed after the special order was confirmed, binding the Council to an expenditure of not more than £3,000 for the first year out of the loan expenditure.

At the Magistrate's Court, yesterday afternoon, before Mr W. P. James, S.M., a claim was made by J. B. Keith, agent, against J. Elder, for commission amounting to £l7 103 on the sale of a property. Mcintosh, in Queen Street. Mr Biinkhorne, who is permanently incapacitated from doing any kind of manual labour, will doubtless receive a fair share of public support in his new enterprise.
