FIRE IN A MINE.

NINETEEN MEN IMPRISONED

Received March 6, 8.10 a.m. LONDON, March 5. Through the upsetting of candles, the timbering in the Hampstead Colliery, Birmingham, was set on fire. Nine of the men traversed the flames and escaped, but twenty-one returned to the workings. A rat was lowered in order to test the atmosphere, and was brought up alive. Later, two men were rescued in a semi-conscious condition, and are recovering.

They stated that they shut the doors, and prevented the smoke reaching their comrades. They hoped all their comrades were safe.
