MASTERTON FIRE BOARD.
PRELIMINARY ARRANGEMENTS
The inaugural meeting of the Masterton Fire Board was held in the Borough Council Chambers yesterday afternoon. The members present were Messrs 0. Pragnell, Government representative, J. C. Ewington, J. H. Pauling, W. Morris, representing the Borough Council, and J. J." J. Mallard. A. A. Ewen,. and R. M. Simpson, representing the Insurance Companies. Mr Pragnell was unanimously elected chairman.
A discussion took place on the question of admitting the press to meetings of the Board, and it was eventually agreed to allow the representatives to attend.
On the motion of the Chairman, Mr R. Brown was unanimously elected to the position of secretary at a remuneration of £3O per annum. After a brief discussion, it was. decided to invite applications for the position of Superintendent and De-puty-Superintendent at salaries of £SO and £25 per annum respectively.
The local members of the Board were appointed a committee to value the property at present in possession of the Brigade, and to obtain expert evidence if necessary as to the value of the machinery. The committee was also instructed to prepare an estimate of the cost of the requirements for the ensuing year. The next meeting of the Board was fixed for the second week in May, when the estimates will be discussed. The secretary was instructed to give seven days notice to each member prior to meetings. It was resolved to open an account with the Bank of New South Wales, and the Chairman and secretary were empowered to sign cheques on behalf of the Board.
