CHURCH rOBBERIES IN FRANCE.
THE THOMAS GANG SENTENCED. Received March 4, 8.7 a.m. PARIS, March 3. ; Antoine Thomas was sentenced to six years' penal servitude, ani three others —Francois Thomas, Faure and Dufay—to two years' imprisonment for church robberies.
In October last considerable as-
tonishment was caused in France by the arrest at Clermont Ferrand, of a wealthy merchant, Antoine Thomas, and his brother. The immediate charge against the two latter was that of stealing an historic cope from a church at Blanzac. Numerous Paris art dealers were said by Thomas to have had dealings with him as receivers of stolen goods. They had their agents in London ana America. It was a great conspiracy for the theft and sale of the priceless treasures of French churches. The most famous of the works of art which Thomas admits having stolen is the jewel studded riliquary which was taken from the Church of Ambazac on September 12th, and which is worth from £6,000 to £IO,OOO.
