The beautiful Makuri Gorge, undoubtedly one of the most attractive sights of the North Island, has so far escaped scatheless from the bush fires, which have ruined many othsr scenic resorts through the bush country. The nearest bufih fire has not aproached to within live or six miles of the gorge. - The Conciliation Board has decided, in connection with the butter-work-ers' dispute, to open up communication with both sides with a view to holding a conference at Palmerston North about March 16th. The Borough Council decided last evening, on the recommendation of the Fire Brigade Committee, to strictly enforce the by-law restricting the use of water through hosss, etc., for gardens to contrivances held by hand. Cr Haughey thought that it might not be judicious to enforce th 3 by-law at the present stagp, when the position of the water supply had slightly improved, and the headworks improvements would further considerably improve matters.' The Council, however, decided that there was no justification for the nonenforcement of the by-law at present. Cr Haughey considered it would be impossible to carry the by-law out strictly, but he was satisfied with the Council's decision so long as everyone was summoned for breach of the law.

Sheep-owners would,, therefore, do well by making a careful examination o£ their flocks beforeremoval. It is hard);/ necessary to remir.d farmers that by exposing, lousy sheep in any saleyard or driving them along any highway would in either case constitute an offence under "The Stock Act. 1393."

A Masterton resident, who left the employ of "Tattersall's," Hobart, about five years ago, where he was engaged on the clerical staff, 'States that in a letter received recently from a friend on the staff of the great sweep syndicate, it was mentioned that there was a likelihood of the sweeps being abandoned. "There is too much palm oil necessary now," the letter ran. The Masterton resident said it "'as bad enough when he was there, but it must be costing the sweet) people enormous sums 10 keep the business going at present, under the stringent application of the laws in the different Australian States and New Zealand.
I Either badly-dipped sheep, or sheep dipped with a bad mixture, has been responsible for a considerable number of Poverty Bay farmers being fined of late for exposing sheep infected with lice for sale 7 . As the local stock officials intend administering the law more stringently in respect of lousy sheep the careful dipping of local sheep will be to the interest of farmers. The poor condition of many flocks consequent on the drought will mean that lice will be more noticeable than in previous yeais. The new table dip recently erected by Mr W. H. Buick, Upper Opaki, has been visited by farmers from all parts of the district, and has been universally approved. The strongest point of the clip is that it gives the animals a thorough immersion, and this is not always accomplished with ordinary race dips.
