AUSTRALIA WIN BY 49 RUNS
Received February 27, 5.35 p.m. SYDNEY, February, 27. There was fine weather for the test match to-day. The wicket rolled out well. Young hit one up over the bowler's head, and O'Connor, running from mid-on, effected a good catch. 7 for 123. Rhodes plugged along steadily, reaching his fifty for 113 minutes work.
Jones livened up, and the partnership looked like continuing, and the hopes 1 of the English supporters rose considerably. A change from Macartney to Armstrong brought about .t4e downfall of the English skipper, ■who had marie his 34 in 54 minutes. Rhodes continued to play a steady cautious game. Crawford joined Rhodes. On resuming after lunch, the score .mounted slowly. Noble bowled Rhodes, who received an ovation for a useful performance. He was batting two hours forty minutes. Nine for 198. Barnes was last man, 81 runs being required to win. Noble and Saunders w?re bowling their best, and the batsmen added the runs slowly. Although several times held up by *>"**-r Noble, they pulled down the deficit to fifty, Crawford showing fine cricket. Then Barnes succumbed to •Saunders, and Australia were left victors by 49 runt., while Jones was left to lament throwing away his wickets in the Englishmen's first innings.
