CONSIDERABLE DAMAGE DONE,

PEOPLE RESCUED FROM HOUSETOPS. Received February 25, 10 a.m. SYDNEY, February 25. Splendid monsoonal rains are general. All the northern rivers are in flood, causing considerable damage. v Police boats rescued many people from the roofs of houses in the inundated area round Newcastle. From one residence, round which the water was ten feet deep, sixteen persons were rescued. Latest reports from Maitland show that the flood, after rising to thirty feet, is falling. Many farms were inundated, but a timely warning prevented the losses of stock. At Bowraville there was sixteen inches of rain, ten inches falling in twenty-four hours.
