The State Government has decided that it is inadvisable, in view of the present knowledge of germs and their effect, that Dr Danysz's virus for rabbit extermination, should be brought to Australia.

Received February 25, 9.45 a.m. MELBOURNE, February 25. Admiral Sir Richard Poore, who succeeded Admiral Sir Wilmot Fawkes as Commander-in-Chief of the Australian station, will hoist his flae on the flagship Powerful to-day.
SYDNEY'S ELECTRIC POWER
PLANT.

The City Electric Lighting Committee discussed the report of the expert appointed to enquire into the condition of the City Council's electric power plant. The report showed that the engines were in urgent need of overhauling, and in some cases unsafe to work.
The committee decided that immediate repairs should be carried out.
DAVIS LAWN TENNIS CUP.
Received February 25, 11.30 p.m MELBOURNE, February 25.
The secretary of the Tennis Association has received a challenge from the British Isles for the Davis Cup. This ensures a match being played in Victoria for the Cup towards the end of this year. A challenge can be received up till Monday next, and it is expected that America will also enter.
OPIUM SMUGGLING
AN ARREST MADE
A GIGANTIC COMPANY.
Received February 25, 11.30 p.m ADELAIDE, February 25.
A man named Ellison, , a shopkeener at Port Adelaide, was suspected of opium smuggling, and the police searched his shop and private residence fruitlessly. While they were about to leave the residence they observed disturbed earth in the garden, and investigations revealed a plant of opium. Ellison has now confessed that he was the Adelaide and Broken Hill agent of a gigantic opium smugglingcompany, which had establishments at Port Darwin, Sydney, Brisbane, Melbourne, and other parts of Australia.
The opium unearthed came from Sydney.
