THE TEST MATCH
PLAY STOPPED BY RAIN

The test match was resumed today. Light showers fell in the morning, but the wicket was dry with a hard southerly gale blowing, when Hobbs and Gunn resumed. The wicket was slow but easy when stumps were drawn last night, but the rain made it more difficult at the start.
Hobbs added seven to his overnight score, and then Saunders bowle:! him. Two for 135.
QUIET SCORING. The score mounted quietly. Then rain prevented play for a quarter of an hour. HUTCHINGS RUN OUT. On resuming Hutchings was run out. Gunn called, but repented when Trumper returned the ball smartly to the wicket-keeper. By this time Hutchings was three-parts of the way down the wicket. The wicket-keceper threw the ball to Saunders, the bowler, and Hutchings, who did not attempt to get back, was dismissed. Three wickets for 168. After lunch Hardstaff commenced hard-hitting, getting into double figures in three strokes. Then a heavy shower drove the player" to the pavilion, and the wicket got such a drenching that play was abandoned for the day at 4.30. Scores:— AUSTRALIA. First innings 137 ENGLAND. First innings.
