Last evening there* was a fairly heavy downpour of rain, lasting about an hour.
The.Wairarapa Charitable Trotting Club have decided to give £3OO in stakes for their next meeting.

The sum of £IOO was paid in at the fortnightly meeting of the Workers' Mutual Benefit Building Society last evening.
Mr J. MacKenzie, the well-known New Zealand representative for Messrs Quibell Bros', sheep dips, will shortly be leaving New Zealand on an extended trip to the Old Country. A general meeting of members of St. Patrick's Day Sports' Association is to be held in the Foresters' Hall on Saturday evening, for the purpose of appointing officers for the forthcoming sports meeting. Mr E. J. Dolan is attending the sittings of the Supreme Court at Wanganui, in connection with thy case, Nixon Company v. Ross and Johnston, a claim for £460 —part commission. Mr Barnicoat is appearing for the plaintiff and Mr Cohen, with him Mr B. J. Dolan, for the defendant.
Mr J. J. Hillas, of Mauriceville, informed a Wairarapa Age representative, yesterday, that the residents in the vicinity of Mauriceville had a trying time on Tuesday night owing *o a bush and grass fire. The conflagration started on Mr Malabar's property, and swept through the farms of Messrs R. McKenzie and R. Cameron. When the fire reached the latter property the wind fortunately changed, driving it towards the hills, and thus saving other properties from sustaining damage.

A reward is offered for the recovery of a collie dog lost from the W.F.C.A. stable.
Mr H. H. Reynolds, dent ; st, has commenced the practice of hi? profession in rooms in the Exchange Buildings.
The New Zealand Railways Department advertise special excursion fares to Wanganui in connection with the champion sculling match on 25th February. At the Master ton Auction Mart, on Saturday, Mr J. R. Nicol will sell furniture, including a piano, also general goods as advertised.
House-holders on the eastern side of Queen Street are notified that the water will be cut off from certain streets for four hours from 10 a.m. to-day. The Mosterton County Council give notice that the special rolls in connection with the proposed loans for a water supply for Opaki and Lansdowne are now open for inspection. Objection to the roll must be lodged not later than the sth March next.
At the Masterton A. and P. Show, yesterday, Mr H. Sinclair, of the Osmond Cycle Works, made an exceptionally large display of bicycles, motor cycles, and motosacoches. Included in the cycles.were Osmonds, Royal Saxons, Imperial Rovers, Velox, and Rudge-Whitworths. During the day Mr Sinclair sold quite a good number of machines, and booked two orders for forward delivery. In his Queen Street premises a big stock is displayed, and during the next two wee.ks specially low prices will be asked for cycles. The "Autocar," of November Ifith, 1907, page 780, in i f s report on the exhibits at the Olympia Show, and after commenting on the details of the construction of the 14-1G Model De Lux Argyll car for 190S, made the following statement:—"For its power, price, and general automobile design and execution the Argyll is not surpassed by any car of its class in the Exhibition" Mr E. A. Schwartz, representative of the Scott Motor Company, who handle the Argyll cars, is in Masterton at present, and for the next few days may be consulted at the Club Hotel. He is prepared to give trial rides in the cars to intending purchasers, and will supply all necessary information.
The Town Hall was packed last evening, when the second entertainment of their season was given by Montgomery's Entertainers. The pictures ohown were particularly good, and were warmly applauded. "Th 6 King and His Navy" was a striking film. The coloured films were a feature of the picture part of the entertainment, while of comic pictures there was a well selected variety. Miss Hilda Hargood's songs were vociferously encored. Mr Edmund Montgomery, too, met with welldeserved applause, his singing being greatly appreciated by the audience. Mr Harry Hall had to respond to several encores for his comic song°. The Company will brmg their Masterton season to a close to-night. Children accompanied by their parents will be admitted to all parts of the Hal! at half price. Airong the pictures to-night will be one showing Webb and Tressider, the scullers, at their training operations. The result of the Limerick competition will be announced from the stage.
