A Message From the Sea.
PROBABLY A HOAX. NELSON,February 15. A bottle containing a message was picked up on the Motueka beach, stating that the ship Lena had been wrecked on the North Cape on December 25th. All the crew had been saved, but they had no provisions and help was wanted. The message goes on to say that the Lena left New York on November 24th with wheat for the Chatham Islands, and fell to pieces at midnight in about two hours. The message, which was signed "Jas. Robinson, chief mate," is looked on as a hoax, as the Lena is not likely to take wheat to the Chatham Islands, and she could not have reached North Cape in the time.
