THE DAYS OF LENIENCY PASSED.
LONDON, February 14
Speaking in the House of Commons, Mr Gladstone added that last year, when the suffragettes' offences were their first offences, he had made representations hoping that leniency would prove effective, but that leniency had been used for the purpose of encouraging further offences. It was no part of his duty to constantly interfere with the discretion of the capable, experienced stipendiary magistrates exercising it fairly in the puhlic interest.
SUFFRAGETTES FINED
THEY ELECT TO GO TO GOAL

Miss Kennedy and another suffragette, who arrested whilst attempting to storm Parliament House", have been fined £5 each with arfalternative of a'month's imprisoirnent.
Seven other defendants were ordered to enter into sureties to keep the peace, in default six weeks' imprisonment. All the defendants elected to go to goal.
