A well-known Ihuraua settler states that the carrying: capacity of farms in the district will be reduced by one-half during the coming winter, says the "Eketahuna Express," and that rain, if it did come now r could not possibly save the situation. General regret will be felt by residents of the Wairarapa at the death at Hukanui of Mr S. Foss, which occurred on Saturday evening. The news was only received by his son, Mr R. Foss, Headmaster of Upper Plain School, yesterday, and came as a great shook, as the late Mr Foss appeared to be in excellent bealth a week Deceased came to New Zealand over 25 years ago, and for a very long period was manager of Tarathhi Cheese Factory. He relinquished this position about eight years ago to take up farming. Deceased was universally respected, and the utmcst sympathy will be felt with his family in their bereavement. As (he late Mr Foss was not known to his son in Masterton to have been ailing, he surmises that the ordeal which the settlers at Hukanui have undergone through bush fires may have told on his father, as families up there have hardly been able to get a proper night'"n rest for over a week past. The lace Mr Foss was G7 years of age. '

Harvest was the theme for both services at the Methodist Church, Masterton, yesterday, the Rev. D. J. Murray occupying the pulpit on both occasions. The church had'been prettily decorated with harvest offerings, in front of the pulpit a very fine display of luscious fruits being arranged. The choir was tastefully arranged with sheaves of corn, and the whole scheme of decorations, which was carried out by the young ladies class of the Sunday-school, was well executed. The musical portion of the service was specially arranged by the choirmaster, Mr S., Ralph, and the singing was undoubtedly of a high standard. Harvest hymns distinguished the morning service, while in the evening Mozart's "Twelfth Mass" (anthem), "0 Come Let us I Sing," by Berthold Tcuas (offertory), a vocal solo by Mrs Pikelt, and a emphonium solo were rendered. The evening service saw the church filled, and the Rev. Murray took as his text Matthew iv., 19, "And he said unto them 'Follow me; and I will make you fishers of men.'" The address was most interesting. The rev. gentleman has lost none of his fervour of utterance since his departure frum Masterton. The fruit and vegetables are to be given to the Masterton Hospital.
