DISTRICT HIGH SCHOOL EXAMINATIONS.

HEADMASTER'S REPORT.

In his monthly report to the meetling of the Masterton School Committee, on Thursday evening, Mr W. Jackson, headmaster of the District High School, gave the following particulars concerning the success of the pupils attending the school in ~the various examinations held in December last: — Matriculation Examination. Six pupils passed this examination, and in every case with credit, that is they obtained a pass in the •Solicitors' General Knowledge Examination, on-their work in the Matriculation Examination. These pupils jTare now qualified to enter the University. Civil Service Junior Examination. —Seventeen pupils entered for this examination. The whole of ihein qualified, fourteen being placed in the credit list. Two of the successful p: boys have been offered Civil Service cadetships at £65 a year each. The whole of these seventeen pupils are ■entitled to senior free places with free secondary education until they are ninteeeti years of age.

Senior Board Scholarships.—-Nine pupils entered for these scholarships, •open to scholars under 16 years of age, and which are tenable for two years, at £4O a year if the winner is ■compelled to live away from home, or £5 a year if not compelled to live away from home. All the nine qualified in the examination, the four standing highest in the list having scholarships awarded to them. The place of honour in this examination was won by a pupil from this school with a good margin to spare. The examination for these scholarships is 1 open to the colleges, high schools and district high schools in the whole of the Wellington district. Junior National Scholarships.—ln this examination nine pupils from this.school qualified, the one standing highest on the list having a scholarship of £4O awarded to him tenable for two years, if compelled to*live away from home, or £5 a year if not compelled to live from home. The total maximum value of tha scholarships won by the pupils of this school in the above examinations amounts to £4ob.
