TURF NOTES.

(By "Zetland.")

The nominations received for the initial, meeting of the Wellington Pony and Galloway Club must be deemed very satisfactory by the promoters of the gathering, and a successful day's racing is assured. With proper management the Miramar meetings are sure' to increase in popularity, and .within a few months really big meetings will eventuate. Mr C. H. Smith, owner of Gawain and Dulcinea, has decided to retire from racing, and is offering his horses for sale. . There should be good racing at Eketahuna to-day, as fair average fields will be seen out in each event. Class is better represented than at previous meetings of the Club. Wairarapa will be represented at the Woodville meeting by Royal Blue, Merrie Zealand, Aberration, Sandix, Lochiela, Oblivion, Aborginal, Elfrida, Nitchevo, Diplomatic, Sunbonnet, and Kelso. A fair share of the stake money should come this way# uv u Southern papers are now publishing the figures in their racing reports, indicating the position held by the various horses in the totalisator betting. Although this does not give an idea as to the amount of the dividends, the figures are useful, inasmuch as they make more complete reports of the genera 1 , racing details. Weights for the Wanganui Cup are due on Saturday. Seven hundred guineas were refused a few days ago for Apa, the owner asking 1,000 guineas for the Addington-Muriwai gelding. A two-year-old full sister to Gold Crest has been put into work at Hastings.
