MASTERTON BOROUGH COUNCIL.
WORKS COMMITTEE
The ordiiidry meeting of the Masterton Borough Works Committee was held last evening, there being present:—Crs J. H. Pauling, (chairman), A. Hnughey, W. Morris, J. Prentice, W. Pragnell and the Mayor (Mr J. M. Coradine). Mr J. Dixon attended the meeting and urged reasons why the connection from the water service to his premises in Chapel street placed so as not to be recorded or. the meter should not be disconnected from the mains, an intimation to this effect having been made to him by the Council. It was decided to inform Mr Dixon that as the water used by him was not for domestic purposes, and was not taken through a meter it was against the regulations and unfair to the rest of the ratepayers and the notice served on him must be complied with. In connection with Mr W. G. Beard's application for the opening up of Sussex street through to Herbert street made by him to the last meeting of the Council, the Committee decided to be content with a bridge over the creek of a width of not less than 33 feet.
An application from Mr W. B. Chennells to erect a sign-board over Perry street in front of his premises was refused, as it was contrary to the bv-laws.
It was decided to discontinue hiring out the Jubilee engine during the present spell of dry weather, as the Committee considered that the letting of the engine on hire under the conditions laid down by the Council was undesirable under the circumstances existing at present.
The AcMng-Town Clerk was directed to request forthwith the execution of an agreement for the supply of water to the hospital, otherwise the cutting off, of. the supply might be a question at issue. In reference to the widening of Makora street, it was resolved to request the owners, occupiers and other persons interested in lands abutting on the street to meet the Committee a fortnight hence with a view to adjusting certain matters. The Acting-Engineer was directed to extend the water supply to a house occupied by Mr McNally, in Colombo road if satisfactory arrangements can be made.
In regard to the. petition of the Masterton cab-drivers presented to the last meeting of the Council asking that the Council take steps to put certain streets now, coated with loose metal in a reasonably passable state the Acting Town Clerk'was instructed to inform the petitioners that as soon as the weather conditions permit the request will be attended to.
The Acting Town Clerk reported that he was unable in certain cases to obtain the execution of agreements in connection with the supply of water to premises outside the borough now supplied by water from meters. The Committee decided that inasmuch as the water is supplied to persons outside the borough by act of grace on the part of the Council, and that tha execution of an agreement should be precedsnt to the supply of water, instructions be given that unless such agreements are entered into forthwith the water supply will be cut off without further notice. Accounts amounting to £223 7s 3d were passed for payment.
