MONUMENT TO THE LATE MR SEDDON.
A COLUMN 59 FEET HIGH.

BY TELEGRAPL"—FKESS ASf OCUTJON; WELLINGTON, February 3. • The Government intends calling for tenders immediately for the monument to be erected over the grave of the late Mr Seddon, on Observatory Hill, overlooking the Bolton street Cemetery. • - ' According to the design prepared by Mr Campbell, the Government architect, the monument is to oonsis' of a and pedestal starring on a base of three steps, the bottom step being 23 feet square, *ahd the top ore 14 feet square. The "pedestal is \o have a height of 16 feet from the ground, and the column is to be c 3 feet in height above the | pedestal. The shaft of the column is square and measures 4ft 6in. on each side, tapering to 3ft 10in at the top. It has a mouldedgand foliated capital, and is * surmounted by a symbolical statue 10ft in height, the total height of the -monument, being 59 feet from 1 the ground. The pedestal has four square buttresses on the angles with carved trusses on the top, each surmounted by a lion recumbent. The monument' will be constructed with a core of ferroconcrete, and faced with'New-. Zealand marble or granite. The pedestal has panels which will admit of suitable inscriptions, and over which there are carved festoons, one having in plain letters the word "Seddon." Tenders are returnable within a couple of weeks, and it is expected that the work will be completed within four months. Owing to its large size and its prominent position the monument, will be discernable from the whole of the harbour, and many parts of the city. It will be massive, and will be proportionate, though without elaborate detail.
