BROKEN HILL MINES. A "BEAR" GAMBLE. Received January 31, 10.13 a.m. SYDNEY, January 31. For some months past the "bears" have had it all their own way with Broken Hill shares. Yesterday a revulsion set in on the Commonwealth Exchanges, and there was something like a panic in the rush to secure scrip, which had been heavily oversold. Prices fluctuated violently. The capital value of eight Broken Hill mines advanced in the aggregate over £OOO,OOO. The Proprietary mine alone was appraised at over a quarter of a million advance on Wednesday's value. THE TARIFF. SLOW PROGRESS. Received January 31, 10.13 a.m. MELBOURNE, January 31. The Federal tariff is making slow progress in the Senate which recommends a reduction of the duty on stearine wax from a penny to a halfpenny, and the taking of a halfpenny off confectionery. I HEAVY RAINFALL. SEVERAL BRIDGES WASHED AWAY. Received January 31, 10.13 a.m. BRISBANE, January 31. Twenty inches of rain fell at Croydon in saven hours. A number of bridges were washed away, and the railway line was considerably damaged. RHONDDA COAL STRIKE. THE TROUBLE OVER. Received January 31, 10.13 a.m. SYDNEY, January 31. The Rhondda miners have agreed to the court's suggestion, and the deadlock has ended. (The Special Court suggested that the owners should pay the amount into court, pending a decision. The owners accepted the suggestion). FIRE AT BIOGRAPH ENTERTAINMENT. Received January 31, 11.25 p.m. BRISBANE, January 31. A hiograph show at Rockhampton took fire, and seven thousanJ feet of films were burnt. The audience stampeded, but no one was Iv.'il.
