HURRICANE AND VOLCANO.

SERIOUS DAMAGE AT THE ISLANDS. )!•* TELEGRAPH—PRESS ASSOCIATION. AUCKLAND, January 29. The volcano on Savaii, Samoa, continues active, with but slight intermission. Passengers by the Navua, which arrived to-day, had a magnificent view of the volcano by night. A severe hurricane was experienced over a portion of the Fiji group for two days about a fortnight ago. It was especially destructive at Lomaloma. From scanty reports to hand, it seems that besides great damage to copra plantations, it destroyed several buildings on shore, including Mark's store. The small . steamer Parua was driven on a reef and completely wrecked. The Ripple was also piled up on a reef, but it had the better fate of being refloated. Two ketches were completely broken up. An overdue cutter, it is feared, surk at sea in the hurricane.
