PAHIATUA RACES.
(Special Reporter).
The Pahiatua Racing Club's annual meeting was opened yesterday in ideal weather. There was a large attendance of the public. The racing on the whole wss interesting, and some exciting finishes were fought out. The track was hard, which made the times during the day fairly fast on the average. The proceedings opened with the Handicap Hack Hurdles (If mile), for wb>.h there were five starters. Mt. Cook was. installed favourite, but he only managed to run into third place. Royal Blue, the second favourite, had things all his own way for a short distance, but then he died away, and trie winner turned up in Papatawa.* The Railway Handicap saw a field of five go to the barrier. Platypus »nd Gawain looked dangerous in the straight, but Splendid Idea put in a great run and justified the support placed in her. Another field of five sported silk in the Flying Hack, a six furlong race. After two furlongs had been covered, Greenleaf went to the front, and, stalling off a challenge in the straight by Waikaraka, won by half a head. The favourite, Miss Vera, was never prominent. The Welter Hack Handicap attracted seven contestants, of whom Mikotahi was made favourite. The bay gelding got going at the rise of the barrier, and never allowed anything to pass him, winning easily by a good margin. The largest field of the day, viz., ten, weighed out for the Pahiatua Cup (a mile and a quarter). Waipaku and Nova were made favourites; wh'le Gaelic, King's Lynn and San Julie were also heavily backed. The race was run at a good pace, Waipa'iu \ leading the field from the start to , the top of the home turn. Here the field'bunched, and then Loiret earner away, and won by over a length. The race for second place between King's Lynn and Nova was a good one. The Telegraph Stakes was won fairly easily by Bonnie Doon, the favourite, Axite, dropping away at the top, of the straight. As was generally anticipated, Prince Hassan won the Trial Hack Plate. He was always jn a good position, and down the straight he shot out and beat First Mate by a neck without any great exertion. The xace between Rosegrove and Splendid Idea in the Konini Welter was the best of the day. Both horses came down the straight neck and neck, and the former shot past the post with a nose to the good, amidgreat excitements Speculation on the totalisator was very brisk, the sum of £6,621 being invested, as compared with £5,983 for the corresponding day last year, being an increase of £638. Fourteen bookmakers paid £ls each for the privilege of betting in thi inside and 10 paid £7 10s each to bet on the outside. The pencillers generally appeared to do a paying business. All the arrangements for the meeting were admirably carried out by the secretary, Mr G. L. Hawley Drew, who was assisted by an energetic body of officials.
