Found Dead.
A CASE OF SUICIDE. CHRISTCHURCH, January 27. A fatality presenting some remarkable features occurred yesterday. The body of a man was found in a small gully on the highest part of the Lyttelton Road, near Sumner. The body was brought to Sumner, when it was found that the only apparent injury was a fracture of one leg .above the ankle. It was evident that the man had not fallen far, but had gripped among, the rocks and broken his leg, and he appeared to have moved about a good deal after the accident. In his pocket was found a notebook with a long letter of farewell to his wife, concluding with the statement of his intention to do away with himself. His name was Topham, and he was a resident of Sydenham. The letter was dated January 23rd, and it is supposed that the man died that evening. . LATER. At the inquest held to-night a verdict was returned that Topham, while of unsound mind, committed- suicide by opening a varicose vein in his leg.
