A WAIROA SENSATION.
SUPPOSED CAUSE OF THE SHOOTING.
ATTEMPTED MURDER AND SUICIDE. BY TELEGRAPH MtKSS ASSOCIATION WAIROA, January 27. An attempted murder and suicide are reported from Opcuiti.' It appears that a young man named A. E. Stevens was escorting a young ladv/named Brownlee from Mrs Steven's to the house of Mr T. Byrne, her uncle, about six o'clock last night. ' While on the way they were waylaid by a man named David Irwin, said to be from New South Wales, who fired a revolver at Mr Stevens, wounding him in the arm.and knock- ' ing him off bis horse. Irwin then fired at Miss Brown lee, and her horse, taking fright, started back to Stevens' house. While Sevens was getting up Irwin fired at him again, but missed, and turned the revolver against himself, shooting himself under the chin, dying almost instantly. The police have left for the scene. The details are metgre. |
GISBORNE, January 27. The District Coroner has been advised that David Irwin, a labourer at Opouiti, shot at Alfred Stevens and then shot himself" dead. Jealousy is supposed to be the cause of the trouble. "
