LOCAL AND GENERAL.
The Masterton Borough Council has granted Mr J. R. Nicol a renewal of his auctioneer's license. Mr Wilkinson, of Western Lake, had his woolshed and a number of sheep burned by a scrub and grass fire in that district on Monday night. The Plunge Championship at the Aquatic Sports, held in' Masterton on Wednesday, was won by G. S. Bennett, with W. H. Smith second. The well-known medical journal, "The Lancet," has been mulcted in £I,OOO damages for libellous comments concerning "Tucker's Asthma Specific." At a Cabinet meeting held yesterday, it was decided to transfer Lionel Terry, who is now an inmate of Seacliff Asylum, to one of the gaols, and to declare the portion in which he is located a mental hospital. A sad tragedy is reported by cable from Stowell, a mining town west of Ballarat. A house in which an infant was sleeping caught fire, arid a woman who rushed to the rescue dropped dead at the door. While fielding a ball in the Waira-rapa-West Coast cricket jnatch on the Park Oval yesterday afternoon, Mr T. Prow had his right hand split at the junction of the third and fourth fingers, and had to discontinue play. The supply of milk to the dairy factories in the Carterton, Masterton, and Lower Valley districts is steadily decreasing, owing to the dry weather and scarcity of grass. It is anticipated that most of the factories will cl'ise earlier than usual this season, owing to the diminished milk supply.
A Press Association cable states that the Right Hon. Sir H. Fowler (Chancellor of the Duchy of Lancaster); speaking at Wolverhampton, on Tuesday last, made a strong pronouncement against Socialism, which he said was advocated by well-mean-ing men who had not thought out thd question.
The funeral of the late Mr L. S. Wilton, son of Mr H. Wilton, of Bideford, who died on-Tuesday, took place at the Masterton Cemetery, yesterday afternoon, and was largely attended by a number of settler?, amcng whom the deceased was well-known. The Rev. A. T. Thompscn officiated at the graveside. The marriage settlement of Miss Gladys Vanderbilt, daughter of W. K. : Vanderbilt, the American millionaire, and sister of the Duchess of Marlborough, makes her intended husband, Count Laszio Szechenyi, a .gift of a million sterling. The money, however, is to be held in trust, the Count to have the use of the income therefrom.
The Government architect, Mr John Campbell, is preparing sketch plans for the new Parliament Buildings, in order to allow members of Parliament ample opportunity of fully considering what form the new building shall take. With a view to securing the best architectural talent procurable, the Prime Minister has decided to offer premium? for the first, second and third competitive designs.
As showing the amount of support that the Masterton A. and P. Association is likely to receive in the fat cattle classes at the show in February, it may be mentioned that no fewer than seventeen entries, representing t'wenty-seven head of fat cattle, have already been received from one prominent Hawke's Bay In'eeder. A refreshingly cool change took place in the temperature, yesterday. In the morning a slight fall of rain occurred, and throughout the day the sky was overcast, but indications of rain vanished during the evening, and there was no appearance of rain when the paper went to press. Mr A. Provan, of Heddon Bush, better known in racing circles as the owner of Office Girl, brought to Invercargill last week a magnificent specimen of the trout species. The fish, which was captured by Mr Provan- in the upper reaches of tli9 Aperima, an artificial minnow being the bait used, is over 2ft 9in in length, with a girth of 2ft 4in, and weighs 241bs. The trout is being stuffed and mounted. The members of the Wdst Coast cricket 'team which played "a match against the Wairarapa eleven on the Park Oval, yesterday were entertained by the Masterton cricketers at the Central Hotel last evoniiig.The gathering was ( of an informal nature, no speeches of any description being made. A number of songs were contributed, and a very enjoyable evening was spent. The ,visitors are loud in their praise of the hospitable manner in which they have been treated by the local cricketers, during their stay in Masterton. Diabolo has claimed its first victim in England. Rose Paget, aged eight,, was in her parents' garden at Dalston indulging in the game for the . first time, the toy having been given to her by a brother. After a short spell of play, she went indoors, and said that the spool, in descending, had utruck ths left "side of her head. Early next morning she 1 was seized' with convulsions, and died shortly afterwards. At the inquest the cornner said that the spool produced (of wood) was sufficient to hurt any child if it fell on its head from any height, though he did not think it wou'd be so injurious as sojne of the spools (made of china) that he saw used in France last summer. At the Magistrate's Court, yesterday, before Mr W. P. James, S.M., James Foley pleaded not guilty to a charge of being drunk and assaulting* Constable Doyle at the railway station on Wednesday afternoon, and after hearing the, evidence of the constable and Mr H. Bennett, relieving stationmaster, his Worship imposed a fine of 5s for drunkenness, and £5, in default one month's imprisonment, on the charge of assault. Fourteen days were a'lowed in which to pay the lines. A lad named Thomas Christie was charged at the Juvenile Court with the theft of £lO, the property of James Scorrar, at the Aquatic Sports in the Park on the previous evening. The evidence showed that, Scorrar was the proprietor of the refreshment stall at the Park, and'i when closing up he had placed his bag containing the money near an opening in the tent. The accused 1 had taken the bag by inserting hi& hand through the opening and had made off, but was shortly captured by Scorrar's son. The Magistrate ordered the youth to receive twelve strokes of the birch. A furnished bedroom is advertised to let. An advertiser requires a ciokgeneral. A probationer is wanted for a private hospital. Mr E. Rawson notifies that he will resume his law classes on Monday,. February 3rd. Oilskin coats are re-oiled and repaired at Mr J. L.
