INSURANCES ON COHEN'S STOCK AND BUILDING. Received January 21, 10 a.m. SYDNEY, January 21. Cohen's buildings were insured ror ,£14,500 in the Lancashire office. They were valued at £25,000. Toe stock was insured for £.100,000. It is believed the latter is largely covered by the United Company, which has the psk distributed. (One of tin: mo;;t disastrous fires in the history of Newcastle broke out on Monday morning in Cohen and Company's large warehouse, situated in a block of business premises bounded by Scott, Margaret, Hunter, and Wolffe Streets, and the whole block was more or less damaged.; LABOUR CONFERENCE AT HULL. Four hundred delegates, representing 1,072,413 unionists, attended the Hull Labour Conference. i Mr W. Hudson, Labour Member for Newcastle-on-Tyne, presided, .and briefly reviewed the social legislation ofjthe past year. He insisted that that old age pensions and the unemployed questions specially required attention. He claimed that the outcry against Socialism was really educating the trade unionists to regard it favourably. The Conference resolved to appoint a party election agent. Received January 21, 8.52 a.m. LONDON, January 20. George Flynn, a footman, was arrested on a charge of stealing a diamond tiara from Melton Hall, Mexborougb, Yorkshire. The tiara, valued at £1,500, was buried in a manure heap. MINING ON THE RAND. LABOUR-SAVING DRILLS.
Received January 21, 8.59 p.m. PRETORIA, January 21. Professor Cates of Johannesburg, considers that it is possible to instal 4,000 small drills on the Rand, thereby releasing 24,000 native miners.
