MELBOURNE, January 18. The heat is terrible. The .thermometer touched 112 degrees in the ,ci£y yesterday. People are prostrated. A There have been two deaths from * heat apoplexy. The whole State is suffering. Cases of apoplexy are reported from all parts, and several deaths. At Horsham the.thermometer registered 125 degrees.

The present spell of iheat is the worst experienced in Victoria for 25 year#. The discomfort -is intensified by the hot north wind bringing clouds of - dust and smoke from the surrounding | bush fires. Houb33 are too' hot to sleep In, and thousands of people are sleeping on lawns, gardens and parks, or are camped on the seashore, where bathing proceeds throughout the night Blacksmiths in the Government workshops and the employees of some of the private firms are allowed to cease work. The doctors are having a time. Numerous cases of heat apoplexy repurted, several people dropping in the streets yesterday. A driver of a brewery cart succumbed to heat 7 apoplexy. Horses are sjffering terribly, and some have dropped dead. The ice companies are unable to keep pace with the demand. Country reports show that the hest is increasing. Several deaths from apoplexy are recorded, and there is great mortality amongst domestic animals. Fowjs are dying in hundreds. HEAT UNABATED IN ADELAIDE. v 110 DEGREES RECORDED. ADELAIDE, January 18.
