CAUSED BY OVERCROWDING THE HALL. MOTHERS IDENTIFYING THEIR CHILDREN. HEARTRENDING'SCENES. Received January 13, 8.14 a.m. LONDON, January 12. At Barnsley the children were admitted to the gallery for a penny apiece Many of them .were of four or five years of age For 400 seats 600 passed in, and there were 400 more on the long winding stairs. An attendant suggested the transfer of the surplus to the pit, and a rush .ensued. Those hurrying downstairs overwhelmed those ascending, till a mass of human beings -was wedged in a small space at the foot of the stairs. There were heartrending scenes in the 'hall and at the mortuary when the mothers were''identifying their children. 1 (A cablegram, published yesterday morning, stated that while a kinematograph matinee exhibition was in progress at the Harvey Hall, Barnsley, in Yorkshire, on Saturday, a stampede occurred among the children. In the crush sixteen children were killed and forty inj jred.)
KING EDWARD EXPRESSES HIS SYMPATHY,
Received January 13, 9.45 p.m. LONDON, January 13. His Majesty King Edward has expressed his horror at the Barnsley accident, and has extended his warmest sympathy to the bereaved parents.
