SAN FRANCISCO SCANDALS.
SCHMITZ RELEASED ON BAIL. A NEW TRIAL. ' '' , NEW YORK, January 10. Eugene Schmitz, ex-Mayor of San Francisco, who was foand guilty in June last on a charge of extortion of funds from saloon-keepers, by threatening to take their licenses from them, and whohas since been in gaol, has,been released on bail,.pending a new trial.
THE CAMPAIGN OF PROSECUTION. ' IN DANGER OF COLLAPSING. Received January 12, 4.29 p.m. LONDON, January 21. The "Times'" San Francisco correspondent, referring, to the release of Schmitz and Ruef (a lawyer who was also charged with Schmitz), says there are many - other indictments against them, but the chances are that both accused will obtain their liberty. Schmitz's recent convictiun was annulled on purely technicalities. The whole campaign of prosecution, says the correspondent, is in danger of collapsing.
