Eugene Schmitz, ex-Mayor of San Francisco, who was foand guilty in June last on a charge of extortion of funds from saloon-keepers, by threatening to take their licenses from them, and whohas since been in gaol, has,been released on bail,.pending a new trial.

The "Times'" San Francisco correspondent, referring, to the release of Schmitz and Ruef (a lawyer who was also charged with Schmitz), says there are many - other indictments against them, but the chances are that both accused will obtain their liberty. Schmitz's recent convictiun was annulled on purely technicalities. The whole campaign of prosecution, says the correspondent, is in danger of collapsing.
