THIRD TEST MATCH. By TKi.uaravh—Press Association. Received January 10, 9.18 p.m. ADELAIDE, January 9. The third test match, between .Australia and England, began today, in delightful cool weather. The attendance was over 6,000. Jones wau unable to come to Adelaide, and Hayes, Blythe and Young were also left out of the English team. Roy Hill, of South Australia, is Australia's twelfth man. Noble won the toss, and he and Trumper began the innings on a per feet wicket. Trumper was almost speechless with a heavy cold. Noble began with a square leg-hit to the boundary off Fielder. Trumper snicked Barnes' first ball for three. Two overs yielded eleven. In Fielder's second over, Trumper tried a leg glance, and was bowled off hjs pads.—One for 11. Clem Hill haying a severe cold, was kept back in the hope of not being wanted till Saturday. MacArtney was promoted, and set to business with the confidence of a veteran. Runs came rapidly. At 35 Noble cut a ball from Barnes straight to Hutchings at second slip. MacAlister opined with •extreme caution. McArtney, with a pretty four off Fielder, total fifty after fifty-five minutes' -play. The fielding of the Englishmen was accurate and kept down the runs. A double change of bowling to Crawford and Rhodes was made, but Tuns came faster. MacArtney, twice in one over, cut Rhodes to the boundary. MacAlister took thirty-five minutes to reach double figures. At lunch two wickets were down for 79, MacArtney, having 40 to his credit, MacAlister 16. When the game resumed, Fielder and Barnes bowled, .and ten overs produced only thirteen Tuns. Rhodes relieved Fielder at 92, but the batsmen scored off him. The century was reached in one hour 59 minutes. Crawford relieved Barnes at 106, «md in his second over he had MacAlister caught at second slip. MacAlister batted 93 minutes. Three wickets for 114. Armstrong was cautious. Braund relieved Rhodes at 130. At 140 Braund got MacArtney leg before. The Sydney midget batted faultlessly for one hour 53 minutes, and hit nine fours. He did not give a chauce. Ransford began vigorously. At 160 Armstrong was caught at short slip. Hill batted steadily, but Ransford punisl.ed Fielder and Barnes. At the tea adjournment Ransford had scored 32 and Hill 2, the total being 132. Fielder and Barnes were the bowlers after the tea adjournment, Ransford drove the former to the boundary. With the total at 191 Hill tried to. smother a good length ball from Barnes, and was caught at the wickets. Hartigan opened, with a single off Barnes. With all the Australian champion batsmen out the Englishmen, who had worked most energetically all day, set to work with a will. A couple of braces off Barnes to leg brought up 200, which had occupied 204 minutes. Hartigan, at six, had a narrow escape, as he glanced a ball from Fielder just over the heads of the slips. The next ball hs drove for 4. With 215 up Ransford, in trying to glance Barnes was bowled. He played delightful, crisp cricket, scoring, all around the wicket. He batted 63 minutes and hit six 4's. Carter joined Hartigan. Rhodes and Braund were tried with the ball. Hartigan, batting stylishly, scored at a fair rate. Carte- took 25 minutes to reach 10. Rhodes handed the ball to Crawford at 246. Carter got 4 off each bowler, and 250 went up after 252 minutes' play. Hartigan reached 40 by square cutting Crawford to the boundary. He drove the next ball for four. Fielder relieved braund at 267. In the first over Carter, when 23, snicked a ball high, and Braund, jumping, got it on the tips of his fingers but could not hold it. At 273 Hutchings went on at Crawford's end, and got Carter leg-before-wicket with the fifth ball. The first ball of Fielder's next over bowled 'Hartigan. The Queenslander played a splendid, slashing innings of 75 minutes, without a chance. He hit six 4's. O'Connor and Saunders played out time. The Englishmen fiilded suparbly all day.
