DEATH OF EDWARD HANLAN.
EX-WORLD'S CHAMPION SCULLER. TO BE ACCORDED A CIVIC FUNERAL. Received January 6, 10 a.m. OTTAWA, January 5. The death is announced of E. Hanlan,r of Toronto, ,the well-known sculler. It has been decided to accord him a civic funeral. The body lies in state in the City Hall. (Hanlan was born in Canada, and quickly made his way to the front as an oarsman. In the seventies he carried all before him in England and the United States. In 1884 he defeated Laycock for the championship of the world. He was then challenged by Beach, the Australian, and defeated. Beach and Hanlan met twice afterwards,- the former win-, ning on each occasion. When Beach retired, and Peter Kemp became champion, Hanlan issued a challenge to him, which was accepted. Kemp won, and in the same year (1888) they again met with, result.' Hanlan then retired).
