Mr G. P. Wake, announces himselfj as a Government candidate for seat' at the next-general election. He stood for Patea, as an Independent candidate at the last election. The death occurred, at Palmerston North, on Sunday last, of Mr Joseph Charles Nathan, a member of one of the early pioneering families of the West Coast. He was a son of the late Mr Henry Nathan, of Wanganui, where he was born in 1846, and was educated at the old Collegiate School. Deceased and his brothers bore arms in the Maori campaigns of the sixties; later he settled in the Manawatu, and built up an extensive contracting business, settling eventually at Fitzherber 4 :, .vhere his property was recently purchased by Mr Kyle, of Petone. He took a prominent part in local government, was a borough councillor of Palmerston, and a county councillor. He was also president of the Manawatu Racing Club, and in ihe early days acted as starter. His brothers include Mr Anthony Nathan, Mayor of Taihape, and MesJames G. Bush and Ormsbee, of Wellington. Miss JVinogue, daughter of Cons' cable Minogue, of Palmerston North, and niece of Mrs E. Collier, of Masterton, was professed at the Hill S'treet Convent, Wellington, yesterday morning. Members of the Masterton Football and Cricket Clubs entertained Mr D. Baird, a prominent member of bath clubs, who is leaving to-day to take up his residence in Auckland, at a farewell social last evening. A pre* sentation was made to Mr Baird by Mr McKenzie, on behalf of the members, and suitably acknowledged by the recipient. s
