ASIATIC DIFFICULTY.

CABLE NEWS.

lUnited'Press Association—By Electric Telegraph Copyright.

ENGLISH PRESS OPINIONS. LONDON, January 3. The "Daily News," referring to .the Asiatic difficulty, says:—"lt is much more urgent that the colonies should assist in defining the status of the British citizen than dreaming that they will be able to find in trade or Imperial defence a basis of Imperial unity." ■The "Manchester Guardian" declares that Lord Elgin is powerless to modify the policy underlying the Transvaal registration law. It would be impossible to disallow the law without imperilling even greater interests than those of Indian emigrants.

DEPORTATION OF INDIAN CAMPAIGNERS.

Received January 5, 4.35 p.m. CAPETOWN, January 4. One of the Indians to be deported from the Transvaal served in four Indian campaigns and in the Boer War. He was thrice wounded, and has received many medals. His father was on Lord Roberts' staff at Khandahar. Another Indian, who is also to be deported, served thirty years in the Indian Army.
