WAIRARAPA RACING CLUL.
SUMMER MEETING. (Special Reporter.) An ideal day greeted the first day ■of the Wairarapa Racing Club's summer race meeting, yesterday, and the attendance was particularly large. The grandstand and lawn with the varied colours of the holiday attire •was a pretty picture. The course was in good order though hard, but suited fast racing. The pencillers were in full force, and to all appearances did a thriving business. The racing was interesting and good, and well-contes-ted finishes were the order of the day. The double event was won by Sherlock Holmes and Moloch., The totalisator was worked by the club, and the total investments amounted to .£10,160, as against £9,155 for the corresponding day last year. The secretary, Mr. E. A. Laery, and the stewards had all arrangements complete, which contributed to the success of the meeting. The following are the results of the racing:— MAIDEN HACK RACE, 5 furlongs. Mr W. E. Bidwill's Consolation, 8.3 (F. Langstone) 1 Mr Highden's br g Vasa, 8.3 (R. Hatch) 2 Messrs Gardner and Miller's Blue Bell, 8.11 (W. Rayner) 3 Also started Kelso, Conquer, Vinco, Epsom Downs, Hinerangi, Purakan and San Lass. Time, lmin 2sec. Vasa got first away, and led to the straight, where Consolation, well ridden, got on even terms, winning by a neck, Blue Bell two lengths away. TUHITARATA HANDICAP, 6 furlongs. Mr* ° W.""" McKenzie's Sherlock Holmes, 7.13 (F. Langstone) 1 Mr R. W. Patterson's Prism, 7.7 (R. Hatch) 2 , < Mr C. F. Vallance's Simplex, 6.10 (T. Carroll) ' 3 Also started—Fireiron, Gawain and Sunbonnet. Gawain was first to show in front and led to the willows, where Sherlock Holmes got on even terms. Entering the straight Prism challenged the leaders, and a ding - dong finish resulted in Mr McKenzie's horse winning by a neck. Time, lmin 15see. , RIMUTAKA HACK HANDICAP, 1 mile and a distance. Mr Hy. Nee's Gaelic, 8.1 (L. G. King) _ 1 Mr W. E. Bidwill's Culmination, 9.3 (S. Reid) 2 Mr W. Sklener's Rangihaeta, 9.10 (Langstone) 3 Also started—Highden, Thera and Star Queen. Thera cut out the running, Rangihaeta lying last. Before the straight was reached Gaelic went to the front, Culmination' closely following., In the straight, Culmination challenged Gaelic, the Jatter •winning by a length. Rangihaeta a good third: Time, lmin 57 4-ssec. NURSERY' HANDICAP, 4 furlongs. Mr T.Crosse's No Trumps, 7.12 (T. Prichard) 1 Mr A. White's Waione, 7.1 (S. Reid) 2 Mr J. Cress' Chantyman, 8.5. (F. Langstone) 3 Also started Merrie Christmas 8.5. Chantyman led at the start, but Was quickly collared by No Trumps, who won all the way. Time, 50 2~ssec. WAIRARAPA CUP, 1J mile. Mr G. G. Cork's Moloch, 7.12 (F. Langstone) 1 Mr J. Crews' , San Julie, ,7.5 (F. Cress) 2 Mr W. Smart's Tupono, 7.13 (R. Hatch) 3 Also started Buccleuch 9.0, Grand Slam 8.13, Riflemaid 8.10, Aboriginal .8,2, Saga . 7.7, Naptha 6.11. Tupono was first to show in front, closely followed by Aboriginal •on the rails. The stand was passed in this order, the others being bunched together. . Then Buccleuch drew up with the main division. San Julie passed into the leading division at the back of the course. This position was maintaned to the straight, when Moloch challenged the leaders and won by a short head. Time, 2min 9sec. PUKIO HACK HANDCAP, 6 furlongs. Mr A. Barclay's Penates,' 8.1 (S. Reid) 1 Mr J. Haves Grand Myrella, 7.0 (T. Carroll) 2 Mr R. Knox's Lucretius, 7.7 3 Also started - Wai Lethe 8.10, Pushful 8.8, Russley Maid 8.'3, Diplomatic 7.7, Golden Butter 7.7, Mon Amie 7.5. Russley Maid led off, but at an .early stage had to give place to Penates, who was closely followed by Grand Myrella, and these maintained their position to the finish. Time, lmiti 29sec. REYNOLDS' WELTER HANDICAP, 7 furlongs. Mr W. Cragg's Aberration, 8.13 (F. Langstone) 1 Mr W. McKenzie's Sherlock Holmes, 8.12 (B. Olliver) 2 Mr Highden's Moscow, 8.3 (T. Prichard) 3 Also started—William 9.3, Clem 8.5, Variation 8.0, and Liberator 8.0. The race resulted in a contest between the leading horses and the finish was probably the best of the day. Time, lmin 2sec. MOKAI HACK WELTER HANDICAP, 7 furlongs. Mr J. S. Adams' Merrie Zealand, 9.0 1 Mr O. A. Bunny's Mitcheyo, 8.5 2. Mr F. Armstrong's The Plough, 9.3 3 Also started—Sen Sim 9.13, Warlock 9.9, Lochiela 9.4, Dulcinea 9.3, Hinupai 9.0, Rohgokoica 8.7, and Osiris 8.5. Sen Sirn was left at the post. Warlock cut out the running to the river bend, where Merrie Zealand went to the front, and won by a length from Nitcheyo. Time, lmin 30 2-ssec.
