WELLINGTON, December 23. The High Commissioner cables as follows:—The mutton market is very dull, owing to the poor demand. The tendency of the market seems to be to decline. Canterbury mutton is quoted ai. 3|d, North Island 3£d, Australian 2§d, _River Plate 3d. The suppWof New Zealand lamb is practically* "Exhausted. Australian is in large supply, and Bales are difficult to effect at an average of 4Jd. The beef market is quiet, supplies of River Plate chilled beef being plentiful and very cheap. New Zealand hindquarters are quoted at 3|d, and forequarters at 2|d. The butter is market is very firm, and an active demand continues for Christmas, but lower prices are anticipated afterwaras. The quality of New Zealand butter is giving satisfaction to buyers. The choicest New Zealand is quoted at 120s, Australian 117s, Argentine 117s, Danish 1245, Siberian Ills'. Saltless butter is 2s The cheese market is firm, and there is a good demand. White is quoted at 60s 6d, and coloured at 61s 6d per cwt. The hemp market is dull and unsettled, having been unfavourably affected by the low price of Sisal, which has fallen to £22 10s per ton for good quality. Good fair grade on the spot is quoted at £2B, fair £27, January-March shipments, good fair grade, £27 10s; fair £26 10s. Prices are, however, irregular. The cocksfoot market is quiet, and there is little doing, but a better fetling prevails. Prices are firm at 755. The following are the current quotations for Bradford tops:—36's, low crossbreds, Is Id; 40's, low crossbreds, Is ljd; 44's, medium crossbreds, Is BJd; 50's, halfbreds, ,1s 7d; 56's, quarterbreds, Is lOd; ' 60's merinos, 2s 2d.
