Cambridge University has conferred a Doctorship of Science upon Professor Carslaw, of Sydney University, in recognition of his work in connection with applied mathematics. (Professor Carslaw, born in Scotland, in 1870, has been Professor of Mathematics in the University of Sydney since 1.903. We was formerly lecturer in mathematics at Glasgow University, and has written various mathematical papers to scientific journals.) i
