GUILELESS GIPSIES.

A band of gipsies have astonished the authorities at Nancy (France) by their wealth and their Quixotic business methods.

Th.3 gipsies arrived at Nancy a few days qgo, and were housed in a disused convent. The police gave them permission to follow their trade as tinkers, and in a few hours tliey had plenty of work. To the great surprise of every one the gipsies refused to take a kettle for repairs without depositing double its worth with the ownsr as guarantee against loss. The gipsies lost heavily in this way, for the inhabitants swarmed to the convent with valueless articles, and after securing the usual cash deposit, did not trouble to return again. Suspecting that the gipsies were either mad or concealing some unlawful plot, the police paid them a visit, whereupon the chief of the tribe amazed every one by producing £4OO in bank-notes, £3,000 m gold, sewed in pieces of cloth, and half a dozen bank-books showing anorher £3,000 in deposits. The authorities were convinced of their honesty, but as the gipsies are demoralising the town, they are to be expelled.
