WAIRARAPA SOUTH COUNTY COUNCIL.
MONTHLY MEETING. (.From Our Own Correspondent.) The monthly meeting of the Wairarapa South County Council was held at the County offices, Carterton, yesterday. There were present- Crs. W. Perry (chairman), G. Stevens, T. V. Moore, R. G. Welch, F. Court, R. Barrer, D. Douglas, H. S. Mason and J. Strang. The Treasurer reported as follows': —Cr balance at Bank of New Zealand, £2,327 7s 9d, and the receipts since last meeting £2,128 6s Bd, was read and adopted. The Clerk reported that a grant of £SO had been made for the metalling of Taumata read. A letter was read from the District JRoad Engineer stating that it was the intention of the Roads Department to spend a grant for metalline on Miller's Road, and asking the Council to re-grade :i portion so thai a larger length of metalling may be done. On the motion of Cr Strang, seconded by Cr Douglas, it was decided chat the- matter should Inbrought up for consideration at the next meeting.
The Clerk of the Masterton Count;, Council wrote stating that matters ir connection with the swing bridge a! Waingawa had been referred to the representatives of the Opalci Riding and the County Engineer with power to make such arrangements as they may deem expedient. The Department of Labour wrote asking the Council to decide upen a day for the closing of shops within the county. Cr Perry moved, and Cr Barrer seconded, that a special meeting of the Council be called for' January 25th, to declare the weekly half-holiday. The motion was carried. Cr Perry moved, and Cr Strang seconded, that the Engineer be instructed to give notice to the owners ■of the property where overhanging trees exist, to have them cut t;a:k. The motion wins earn 3d. On the inntk<n of Cr Mason, receded by Cr Barrer, it was decided that ■gorse and other weeds be cleared from oil'all gravel reserves within the county.
Cr Welch moved: "That the Belvedere road from the Carterton borough boundary to the eastern boundary of section 309 and the Dalefield road from the Carterton borough boundary to the eastern boundary of section 304. be treated as main county roads." The motion was carried on the casting vote of the chairman. The Dalefield and Belvedere loads will be known as main roads as from March 31st, 1908. It was decided that tenders should b! called to close at meeting f >r metalling Taumata road. Accounts amounting to £3ll 14s 8.1 were passed for payment.
