TURNED TURTLE.
LOSS OP A BIG SCHOONER. RESCUE OF THE CAPTAIN. Received December 17, 8.58 a.m. LONDON, December 16. The Thomas W. Lawson is a sevenmasted schoner —the largest in the world. The captain declined the assistance of two lifeboats, but accepted the aid of a pilot, who, however, was drowned. The vessel dragged her anchors, and drifted close to Annette Rocks, where she turned turtle. The lifeboats, returning, saw the captain clinging to the rocks. His wrist was broken. The pilot's son heroically swam through the breakers amid jagged rocks, and rescued the captain. (A cablegram published yesterday morning stated that the Thomas Lawson, a 500-ton petroleum boat, capsized while riding at anchor at Scilly Islands, Cornwall. Sixteen persons were drowned. Three were saved.)
