MINE EXPLOSIONS.
NUMBER OF MEN ENTOMBED.
Received December 17, 10.35 p.m. NEW YORK, December 17. An explosion occurred in a mine at Yolande, near Birmingham, in Alabama. Ninety men were entombed. Forty groped their 'vay to the surface within an hour. Rescuers found a number of corpses. SEVEN MEN KILLED. Received December 17, 7.35 a.m. LONDON, December 16. From Gilfachcoch, in Glamorganshire, Wales, comes news of an explosion in a mine, causing loss of life. The accident occurred while the bulk of the men were being paid their wages, otherwise the death-roll might easily have been very much heavier.
There were only twelve men left in the pit at the" time. Of these savon were killed, through burns and 'shock, and one was injurod. The remaining four were rescued from their dangerous position. (The mines are situated some eleven and a half miles sou Mi-west by south of Merthyr Tydvil.)
