BY TELEGRAPH —PRESS ASSOCIATION. Schools on Fire. INCENDIARISM SUSPECTED. NAPIER, December 14. A fire was discovered in the laundry of the Boys' High School early this morning, but the prompt attendance of the brigade prevented the flames spreading. The main building of the laundry was insured in the Norwich Union for £l5O. About £IOO worth of linen was destroyed. Two hours later the brigade was called out again to a fire in the Marist Brothers' School, an old wooden structure. Thei flames bad obtained the mastery, and the building was gutted in a very short time. The insurance, was £7OO on the school, and £SO on the fittings, both in the Atlas office. Incendiarism is expected in both cases. A New Goal Seam. REEFTON, December 14. A twelve foot seam of splendid coal has been struck just outside lleefton. Temporary Seat of Parliament. CHRISTCHURCH MAKES A REQUEST. CHRISTCHURCH, December 14. A meeting of citizens was held at noon to-day, in response to a circular issued by the Mayor to consider a proposal to place before the Premier the .advisableness of holding the next session of Parliament in Christchurch, in view of the destruction of the PariJJament Buildings. The Mayor presided, and said there were many difficulties in the way, but he thought that- Christchurch could supply the needful accommodation, if it could not be found in Wellington. The Canterbury Hail and annexes would be suitable, and the Provincial Council buildings were also available.
The oroposal was supported by the Hons. *C. Louisson, H. F. Wigram, Messrs Gray, M.P,, G."W. Russell, M.P.; T. Tanner, M.P., H. Gapes and others. The following resolution was carried:—"That the Mayor, on behalf of this meeting, wait on the Premier and inform him that there is a strong wish on the part of the people of Christchurch that the next session should be held in this city, and if the Government will consider it, we are prepared to submit a definite offer with regard to a building."
A Constable Stabbed. < A WELL-KNOWN FARMER ARRESTED. PALMERSTON N., December 14. On Saturday afternoon, Constable Connor was stabbed in the abdomen by William Waugh, a well-known farmer of Stoney Creek, when arrest ing him for drunkenness. Waugh is 72 years of age. The weapon used was a pruning knife, and the wound is a serious or.e. Connor behaved pluckily. and with the assistance of a bystander got Waugh into a cab before giving way. Medical assistance was called and Connor was conveyed to the hospital. He is progressing satisfactorily.
