Burglary In WeSlington. WELLINGTON, December 13. The premises of Messrs Ross and Glendining were broken into by burglars and about £l2 taken from a cash box. The Antarctic Expedition. CIIRSTGHURCH, December 13. Lieutenant Shackleton, interviewed, to-day, said that a lcinematcgraph outfit was to be taken with the expedition for the purpose of obtaining typical pictures' of the Polar Regions. He expected that the expedition would return to New Zealand in April, 1909, and if funds permitted they would winter here. They would undertake a navigation cruise in the Antarctic seas before leaving again for England. Schools Of The Empire EVlatch. WANGANUI, December 13. The Wanganui Collegiate School Cadets fired in the Schools of the Empire shooting competition to-day. A stiff and tricky wind was blowing, but despite the unfavourable conditions the lads put up the good score of 454, of which 238 were made at the 200 yards and 216 at.the 500 yards ranges. Rain in Canterbury. CHRISTCHURCH, December 13. Further raie, fairly heavy, fell between seven and eleven last njght, and will greatly improve the crop feed prospects of Canterbury. The rain was pretty general over the province. ... ■? ■" Farm Labourers' Wages. TIMARU, December 13. In the farm labourers' case the Conciliation Board heard a new clas3 of evidence yesterday from men who have established themselves as independent farmers by means of a few years saving. One, an Australian, was able to get a twenty-acre dairy farm after two and a-half years' work for others. Another had got a sixty-acre dairy farm after ten years' work for others; a third now farms 290 acres aftar beginning nine years ago after a somewhat longer period of saving. Native Land Commission. GISBORNE, v December 13. The Native Land Commission concluded its sittings at Waiapu, and Sir Robert Stout is journeying to Gisborne to-day by special steamer. The area investigated was 127,217 acres, of which 53,542 acres is cleared land, carrying 72,275 sheen. Of this area probably 30,000 to 40,000 acres will be available for general settlement. A report on a further 95,000 acres will be submitted by Mr Ngata. A Visiting "Refomsr." PALMERSTON N., Dec. 13. Mr W. H. Judkins, the wellknown Melbourne . Reformer, and editor of the Australian Review of Reviews, interviewed by the Manawatu Daily Times, expressed his amazement at the licensing of bookmakers in New Zealand, and at any member of the Reform Party voting for such a proposition. He said that knowing the evil of bookmakers as they did in Australia, the Reform Party there endeavoured in every way to put them down, and he was extremely astonished to hear that members who profess to he opposed to gambling should have voted for the clause. Otherwise, he commended the Premier's Act. Mr Judkins, who has been spending four months at the Islands for the benefit of his health, which has been completely restored, came from Auckland via Rotorua, and was delighted with the latter and all that has been done for it by the .Tourist Department. He states that the Temperance Party is gaining ground in a remarkable fashion in Australia, and that he intends to return to New Zealand in November next to assist the local option' party here in connection with the polls. Auckland Y.M.C.A. AUCKLAND, December 13. A meeting of. the subscribers to the Y.M.C.A. extension fund decided to acquire a site below the municipal buildings in Wellesley street at a cost of £6,000, for the erection of the new building. It was assurried that the present Y.M.C.A. building would realise £IO,OOO, and that the pro-' ceeds, less a mortgage, acided to the amount realised in the recent campaign, would give a total of £30,200. It is hoped that the new building will be finally opened without debt. Mining; Nsws. AUCKLAND, December 13. During the period ended November 30th the Waihi Grand Junction G.M. Co. crushed 3,418 tons for a return valued at £4,930. This is a decrease upon the return for October, when 3,680 tons yielded £5,979. The total from the mine to date is £85,553. Christchurch Wool Sales. CHRISTCHURCH, December 13. The wool sales are proceeding again to-day. The heavy passings in and rano; k ; of prices quoted yesterday can be taken to-day.
