MASTERTON BOROUGH COUNCIL.
The ordinary meeting of the Masterton Borough Council was held last evening, and was attended by the Mayor (Mr J. M. Coradine), Crs J. H. Pauling, ~J. Elliott, F. VV. Temp'e, A. Haughey, W. Morris, W. Pragneil, J. C. Ewington, J. Prentice and J. Yarr. The acting-engineer reported that suffirient revenue had now been promised to justify the council extending the water mains to Church Street. The acting-engineer said he proposed to have the work carried out. The council adopted the report With regard to the application of Mrs H. L. Meredith for a one-inch water service pipe to her residence "Brooklyn," Renall street, the actingengineer reported that the defect in the present supply to the house was on Mrs Meredith's own property, and she should either remedy that herself or comply with the usual regulations respecting the placing of a meter on the service to liev premises. The Mayor said it seemed to him that the present by-laws were too narrow right through, and it was time they were revised, and made suitable to the times. Mrs Meredith had at present a g-inch supply, but it was necessary for her to obtain permission to connect a new set of pipes to her house, the present ones having become corroded. It was decided to grant the applicant a new f-inch service, and the question of an inch supply was held over until the whole question of water connections were revised.
A petition was received from 29 residents of Cule street asking the council to repair the footpath on the south side of the street. The petitioners stated that they paid half the cos 4- of making the footpath about seven years ago, but it then had only a temporary coating of tar, thinly spread on it, and since that time no attention whatever has been paid to it. The matter was referred to the Works Committee.
A letter was received from the secretary of the Masterton Bowling Club asking the council to re-connect the water supply to the bowling' green with the Dixon street main. v Since the new main had been put'in, the green had been cut off fi'om the Dixon street main, and from the present connection at the end of Hogg Crescent, there was not sufficient pressure of water to serve the front green. The request was granted. Mr M. Caselberg wrote applying for a two-inch water service to his property in Worksop road instead of the two f-inch services as at present. He agreed to pay the extra charges for the water per meter in accordance with the council's x-egulations. Crs Pauling, Morris and Yarr opposed the application, as they considered a two-inch private supply for a garden was too much to take off the four-inch main in the street. Outbreaks of fire had to be considered. It was decided to inform Mr Caselberg that the Council could not accede to his request at present.
