DROWNED IN A WELL.

BY TKLEGBAPH—rKESS ASSOCIATION. PAHIATUA, December 9. The 20 months old infant daughter of Mr Alfred Mace was drowned on Saturday morning through falling down a well. At the inquest held yesterday a verdict of accidentally drowned was returned, a rider being added to the effect that the Borough Council or the proper authority should see that in future all wells in the borough are securely fastened. BENEFICIAL RAIN. CHRISTCHURCH, December 9. The heavy thunderstorm yesterday will have a benecfiial effect. Country reports are to the effect that for about an hour and a half rain fell heavily. This will greatly help the salvation of crops and fesd, :nd relieve the situation which was becoming alarming. CHARGE OF MANSLAUGHTER. PALMERSTON N., Dec. 9. At the S.M. Court, to-day, a charge of manslaughter was brought against Emmanuel White, and he was committed for trial at the next sitting of the Supreme Court. White gave two school girls a ride on his horse, which broke into a sharp canter and threw them on the road. One girl, Lucy Goldfinch, sustained a fractured skull, arid subsequently died. The case against White rested on the point that he contributed towards the girl's death by failing to take proper precautions for their safety.

SUICinE OF A SEXTON. NEW PLYMOUTH, Dec. 9. William Joseph Gamblin, a middleaged man and sexton a; the Te Henui cemetery, committed suicide by cutting his throat last night. He had been confined to his bed with kidney complaint. The nurse left him about 12.30 a.m. A few minutes later she heard a noise, and proceeding to his room found him with a terrible wound in his throat made with a razor, which had apparently been concealed under the mattress. Florence Farndale, a married woman, aged 30, appeare 1 in the Police Court to-day, charged with having murdered her infant child, Marion Farndale, whose headless body is alleged to have been found harbour recently, and was remanded for eight days. .. Accused has stated that she is the wife of a medical man in the Congo. Her father is said to be a resident of , the Waikato. NELSON, December 9. The remains of the late Kev. J. C. Andrew* of lea Station, Tinui, and formerly principal of Nelson College, and Professor of the Wellington College, were interred at Stoke Cemetery, this afternoon, the Bishop of Nelson officiating. At the inquest touching the death of Gfiorge Alfred Cochrane, the jury returned a verdict that the deceased met his death from a gunshot wound and that there wa? no evidence to show how such was inflicted.
